The Oak - Burton - July 2009

Well its been a while , first time under the new owners and when we got there realised it was the last , this was their leaving do !!!! Noticed the stage has been slightly enlarged so Si doesn’t have to stand on one leg anymore ! Set up is getting a little routine these days but the main concern is the proper beer , its been promised that it will be clear by 8.30 pm , it didn’t clear that quick when I was brewing Tom Caxton in the ‘70’s !!!! Anyway , the Peddy and Bass were on by 8.30 and Matt was looking a little more relaxed. I’m doing that ‘take it easy for the first couple of hours so I don’t end up wrecked’ thing , Trudy is driving on the mineral water and looks bored to tears !!! Sad ain’t it ? Anyway the first set is under way , bit of a swap round to keep the regulars entertained and half time soon arrives. At half time I’m getting the usual ‘isn’t your daughter good on them drums’ , I take it in my stride but am still a proud as punch (is that a ‘70’s saying). Second set is under way and a rather interesting piece of playing from Si during ‘Crazy Diamond’ , me thinks he has alcohol poisoning and his memory has gone !! Matt cut it short quickly. Before we know it its gone midnight , the crowd are rocking , there’s a request for ‘I’m a believer’ , well , Matt and Si do it , lyrics via google !! Moving on towards encore time Matt seems smitten with a ‘Trudy2’ , yep not my mrs; this one can just walk straight up to Matt and get what ever song she likes , and Si let her touch his strings !! Hang on a minute , Steve’s doing a power stance , my god , its from the Si school of power stances but adopted for the bass player , its awesome , its bloody awesome , go Steve !! Steve repped The Oak , Si is momentarily in the background , well played Steve , loved it !!! Well , all songs have been done , some again for Trudy2 , the encore is still in progress when Matt disappears , oh , another Red house trick , he’s gone for a waz , hey , Charl’s making an exit from the stage as well , this is what I love about this band , they return , can’t remember which song they ended on , doesn’t really matter as Matt had started to forget most of the words to all songs by now. Took till 01.15 for the Hogg to get off stage , basically; Steve, Charl, Dave and Si took industrial action in the end , think Matt would have gone on till breakfast !! Hell of a night , every gig seems to be the best at the moment !! Matt shakes my hand and we decide to analyse handshakes , you know what its like after a beer , we don’t like wet fish handshakes , they are gay !!! I got a manager’s beer afterwards (always try that one ) !!! Rockin’ night , yet again , well played !!!!
