The Whistle - Burton - March 7th 2008

Boss Hogg return to the 'Whistle'

So to the Whistle again , Charls fav venue , I used take her in when she was 15 and sneak her half a Carling , would never have dream't that she would actually play on the Phil Seaman stage one day !!! Parking up (you know , that operation that you never talked about till your 30 then everything seems to revolve around it) is a little easier this week , most of the band already here and Matts getting the beers in , mmm , I'll have a Veltins then. During set up there is a really emotional moment for me , the band have nominated me as best 'Groupie' 2008/2009 and presented me with a Boss hogg 'groupie' t-shirt. Christ , I was dammed close to blubbing but held it together pretty well for the speech and all the hand shakes but I have to admit it , I went to the loo and totally broke down , Steve caught me in there and I had to pay him 50 quid not to tell anyone !!!! (in reality , thanks Dave , nice touch). The place fills up and the band are on with Pete (harmonica) Youngerman guesting on 'walking by myself' , this is a new one for the band as they don't really do jamming but it works well and Charl must be lovin' it as Pete is a bit of a top nOOb in her eyes !!! The big note fails in Parisianne but it was rather nice that the crowd encouraged Si to get there and with a litte volume tweak it happens along with the crowds cheers. So to half time , more beers , plenty of chat and on with the second set , Pete's on again to 'see the light' , bit of interplay between him and Si and Pete stands down for the night. The crowd are chilling out and the cheers between numbers are louder and louder , Dakota goes particularly well but the highlight of the show was still to come...... just running up to the solo in Comfortably numb and Si climbs onto the speaker stack (30 foot up at least), the Whistles never seen anything like it , 'Listen up' has just questioned whether there are any guitar gods left , well , here we have one , up in the heavens , Fender Strat singing sweetly , crowd gob smacked !!! I've been watching '7 ages of Rock' this week , its been on one of those free channels called Yesterday I think , its taken the viewer through the '50's into the blues era to the Who smashing stuff up to stadium bands etc etc , well , I think we have just witnessed the '8th age of Rock' , Mr Simon Dowling Ladies and Gentleman !!!! So to the many encores including a new slot for 'get your rocks off'. Brill show , surprised I can remember it though , I was uncomfortably numb when I woke up Sunday morning , think I ended up in 3 seperate rounds and drank the whole UK supply of Veltins !!! Next show , Beeston Notts , hope we can get parked up ok ????????? PS , new song request , legendry I think , Springsteens 'Born to run' ???? I know Matts the 'Boss' anyway but this would just confirm things !!!!
