Been looking forward to this for a while , what a great start time , 17:30 , time for loads of beer and still to bed at a reasonable time. Talking of beer , I managed to get Matt sponsored for the night by Greene King under the 'Abbott' brand , think they wanted a young'ish trendy kinda 'rock god' to be seen drinking 'Abbott' so that people wouldn't think its just for codgers with pipes and flat caps. Greene Kings only concern was whether Matt could hold an 'Abbott' pint glass all through the gig and also be seen to drink at least a gallon of it , I advised it wouldn't be a problem at all !!! So onto the set up of the stage , it was a case of putting all the kit out then hoping there would be room for the 5 band members , fortunately there was. Drum sound check was a little different , Charl was working till 5 so Steve did it , an amazing solo using the bottom off the cymbals at times , that is multi-talanted !! Its near to show time and Charl arrives and requests half a lager (thats my girl). Quick shuffle round of the drums and its all ready. On come the band , Matt proudly holding the pint of Abbott while the sponsors look on happily. Great first set , I think this is the best sound yet , really rocking ! The crowd have built no end and Julie seems happy with the proceedings. Matt is probably going to surpass the gallon of Abbott requested by the sponsors , its going to be fun !!! Back on , Steve backing vocals are ace , go Steve , go Steve !! Charl is playing a blinder and Dave has nearly mastered the 257 buttons on his new organ ?!?! Matt is swapping an empty Abbott pint glass for a full one! By the way , has Matt had an Abbott moment and slipped and pushed the vocal reverb to number 11 , quick word with Ian and its corrected , trust the regulars !!! Cracking 'Dead or alive' , thought Ritchie Sambora was in the house, Si's playing is actually a fire hazard !! He has all the moves and all the power stances , if ever there is a 'School of rock 2' Jack Black could contract out the guitar school to Si !!!! So to the encore , I have wrapped 18 foot of gaffer round my head and mouth so I can't shout the usual , no need , on comes summer of '69 , I even had a little dance with Kim !! Its all over , Boss Hoggs first gig at the Roebuck , went down well. Julies dishing out free drinks to the band (I even managed to pursuade her that I am part of it and got an Abbott top-up) !! Booked again for July. Someone at the bar has brought Charl a pint (my god kid , its school tomorrow) !!!! There is even an after gig party going down , gonna raise a fuss , gonna raise a holla' , its not my name , its not my name !! Outrageous. Whats happening now , Matts just heading out with a cheque from Greene King and a Firkin of Abbott under his arm trying to convince us that Zoe will want to party with him when he gets home ??? So , Running Horse , Nottingham next week , wait a mo , Nottingham is not in Burton , who booked that ??? Let 'em off , the great Aynsley Lister has been on that stage , that will do for me !! PS , get 'Born to be wild back' , I know I'm being blamed for its removal but surely theres 4 minutes spare for it (I can feel the tourettes coming back).
